The Nigeria Labour Congress
(NLC), has expressed optimism that the passing of the
Freedom of Information Bill into law will neither hinder nor
jeopardize national security.
NLC General-Secretary, Mr.
John Odah, was commenting on the passage of the Bill on
Wednesday by the Senate.
He told the News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja: “It will rather expose
all those public office holders who have been hiding under
the guise of national security to perpetrate havoc on the
nation’s polity.”
Odah said the Nigerian
media had always been very responsible in the discharge of
their duties, adding that no one should have the fear that
they would abuse the opportunity the Bill has offered.
He said the bill will also
enhance transparency and accountability on the part of
leaders and public office holders.
He commended the Senate for
passing the Bill even though it took a long time before its
passage.
