FOI Bill won’t hinder national security – NLC

New Nigerian, Friday, November 17, 2006

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed optimism that the passage of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill into law will neither hinder nor jeopardize national security.

NLC General Secretary, Mr. John Odah, was commenting on the passing of the bill on Wednesday by the Senate.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that “it will rather expose all those public office holders who have been hiding under the guise of security to perpetrate havoc in the nation’s polity.”

Odah said the Nigerian media had always been very responsible in the discharge of their duties, adding that no one should have the fear that they would abuse the opportunity the bill has proffered.

He said the bill would also enhance transparency and accountability on the part of leaders and public office holders.  He commended the Senate for the passage of the bill even though it took a long time before its passage.
